In a roar of noise and flurry of red Fear the Turtle placards, the women's basketball team stepped into the Nyumburu Amphitheatre for a welcome home befitting national champions last week.
Just the night before, the Terps clinched the NCAA title in an exciting overtime victory. A few of the players still seemed to be in shock, or perhaps it was just exhaustion, but their energy was high. Members of the Mighty Sound of Maryland played Queen's "We Are the Champions" and the pep squad led cheers. The crowd's cheers almost drowned out comments by President C.D. Mote, Athletics Director Deborah Yow, Johnny Holliday and some of the players.
Yow announced that not only would the women's crystal trophy go into a glass case like the men's basketball 2002 national NCAA trophy, but athletics is exploring getting a piece of TD Banknorth Garden's floor, where the championship game was won.
The next day, Crystal Langhorne represented her team at the White House before President George Bush, who was recognizing collegiate national championship teams. Maryland was the only school to have three; field hockey and men's soccer being the other two.
